OhioCAN
Bringing YOUR voice to addiction and recovery
"Embrace, Educate and Empower those whose lives have been impacted by substance use"
OhioCAN takes a harm reduction approach while working with families and friends of substance users. We utilize the decision-making process based on both self-care and love for the user and their families and loved ones. It is based on the values of harm reduction, caring, and incrementalism, rather than those of codependency, tough love, and abrupt behavior changes.
We believe the disease of addiction is devastating to family members and loved ones and that it can impact many others. OhioCAN creates an opportunity for the family, friends and community to embrace and participate in the healing process.Through our social media groups, kinship and peer support, homeless outreach and county wide events, families acquire useful insights regarding substance use, the disease of addiction and tools allowing everyone in the family to heal.
Almost everything we think we know about addiction is wrong. These myths hurt families, friends and our community – and they make it harder for people to get well. One of the top reasons people put off treatment is a fear of the social consequences. In a nutshell, they fear the label of "recovered addict." Why? Because in many cases they risk facing social humiliation and a variety of legal restrictions, many of which stem from a misunderstanding of the disease of addiction.
"To give someone more confidence and/or strength to do something, often by enabling them to increase their control over their own life or situation."
It’s a scientific law in the universe and that law includes every part of your life... from the work you do, to your family, friends and other people and your own opinion of yourself. You are responsible for your own life. You create your own life. Every thought and word and action that you have also has an equal reaction.
OhioCAN provides a broad range of activities to improve the health and well-being for families and their loved ones. These include YouCAN2© Bags providing food, water and basic necessities to detox and overdose patients, the homeless, recovery homes and community correctional facilities, Peer Support for families and loved ones impacted by substance use, Overdose prevention activities, including Naloxone, (a prescription drug to prevent overdose) and first aid training, Educational programs and seminars provided to schools and community events, Kinship Advocacy for Grandparents and Foster families and Homeless Outreach providing food, community support, and harm reduction supplies.
OhioCAN has leadership and community presence in numerous counties throughout Ohio. who is Ohiocan?
We are a grass roots 501(C) (3) organization who through our lived experiences have found our purpose. We are a diverse group of individuals who have lost a child(ren), have a child(ren) struggling, are raising a grandchild(ren) or celebrate recovery ourselves or through a child. We have spent a decade(s) attempting to Change Addiction Now as we jumped through the hoop's "society" has placed in our path. We have endured the shame, stigma and misinformation provided to those having a child or loved one with a substance use disorder. We have evolved and are stronger due to our struggles and aim to reach out to those who recently opened Chapter 1 or simply need someone who understands, a listening ear.
Due to our numerous lived experiences, OhioCAN is able to offer a variety of programs, services and information in hopes of offering assistance to anyone in need of substance use and/or mental health assistance. We are always a phone call or message away.
