Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Statement
The foundation of OhioCAN has always been to bring the family voice and YOUR voice to the conversation of addiction and recovery. This statement represents our first steps in identifying the cultural norms and standards upon which our organization has previously been grounded but which will intentionally reflect and provide more Diverse, Equitable, Inclusive, and Belonging spaces through our work.
Diversity: We appreciate and embrace all the ways people differ: race, sex, gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, socioeconomic status, religious beliefs, culture, experiences and more, and we involve and reflect the communities we serve.
Equity: We align our policies, practices, and resources so that people of all races, cultures, and socioeconomic statuses have genuine opportunities to thrive. We live in a disproportionate society, and equity tries to correct its imbalance by creating more opportunities for people who have historically had less access, especially through education.
Inclusion: We create an environment in which everyone feels valued and respected. Is about diversity in practice. It’s the act of welcoming, supporting, respecting, and valuing all individuals and groups.
Belonging: The feeling and emotion that comes with truly being included. Infers that an equitable structure is in place and functioning to make all people, no matter their differences, feel welcome. When you reach for equity, you’re striving for a system that benefits everyone, no matter their circumstance. When an organization can consider itself a community, where people feel a sense of comfort, connection, and contribution, we see belonging in action, and people feel empowered.
We value a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture in our communities. We are committed to providing an environment where everyone feels like they matter. A place where being different is celebrated and appreciated; no longer shunned because of shame and stigma. We are intentional about learning, educating, innovating, and serving all people from all walks of life. We will do this by embracing different ideas, perspectives, and backgrounds that will enable us to advance our knowledge, skills, and advocacy through a more intentional social justice lens. We know, we are STRONGER TOGETHER and that includes all ideas, perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences.
Turning this vision into a reality is an ongoing journey. We recognize that the work of creating a just world will never be completed, and our growth is in flight. We commit to making OhioCAN a place where everyone, representing the full range of different social and ethnic backgrounds and different genders and sexual orientations, are encouraged to get involved; where that diversity is more than welcomed, it is celebrated; where all people feel a sense of belonging whenever they interact with us, and where all aspects of our organizational culture are aligned with our values; Embrace, Educate, and Empower.
