Vikie is married and the mother of two wonderful children, one celebrating four years in recovery from substance use. She received her college degree in Education, Vocational education and Home Economics. She retired after 32 years of teaching young adults how to drive.
Vickie continues to advocate on behalf of her son's personal journey and road to recovery and for all those sharing his journey

Steps of Change

Families and those impacted by addiction will participate in our annual “Steps of Change” to Educate, Empower and Embrace those living with substance use.They will bring attention to the shame and stigma associated with substance use, while advocating for more evidence based practices and treatment. Steps of Change is a unified State effort to use the power of families impacted by substance use to:• Break the silence, the stigma and the shame• Embrace evidence-based information and abandon outdated beliefs • Show families and loved ones impacted by substance use that they are no longer aloneEach event is open to the public and everyone is encouraged to attend.

Overdose Awareness Day

International Overdose Awareness Day is a global event held on 31 August each year and aims to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of a drug-related death. It also acknowledges the grief felt by families and friends remembering those who have died or had a permanent injury as a result of drug overdose.

By Harry Boomer | July 28, 2016 AKRON, OH - There's a spike in heroin overdoses in Summit County. Out of all the drug overdose cases since January almost 80% have been in the past three weeks. The drug of choice heroin is now laced with another more potent drug. In just 20 days there have been 236 overdoses in Summit County. Twenty-one of them took too much and died."We're now calling it an epidemic because we're seeing it across classes, all races, all social means. It doesn't matter who you are," said Donna Skoda the Summit County Health Commissioner. Skoda said most of us know somebody who is either affected with a drug or alcohol problem or a mental health behavior problem that has led to drug use. "We've had 742 overdoses in the first 6-months of 2016. Last year all together we had 131 opiate deaths, drug overdose deaths. So far this year by July 20th we've had 145," Skoda said.
