Substance use and addiction can harm family dynamics, erode trust, and weaken communication. Those impacted by substance use who experience a loved one living with a substance use disorder often endure a host of painful emotions leaving many unanswered questions. Family members, friends and loved ones may feel at a loss when seeing a loved one caught in the grips of addiction. For example, knowing who to call and what questions to ask are often mind boggling as they attempt to navigate the maze of substance use, addiction and often mental health.
However, families can help themselves and their loved one when proper resources are provided. Despite seeing a loved one struggle, family members can and ideally do play a major role in the recovery process. The role of family in addiction recovery is large and important not only for the user, but for those who love them.
Dr Brad Lander of Ohio State University is the nation's expert on the clinical aspect of addiction treatment. Many people do not understand how addiction works. Dr Lander breaks it down to simple terms, with his squirrel brain method that will make you have a new outlook, and better understanding of addiction.
